Sepia Saturday

Each week Sepia Saturday challenges bloggers with a visual prompt. This week we're going to the movies. I went through the Library of Congress' archives and found an array of photos of theaters and illustrations of people watching movies.

  1. These are all great responses to the prompt, but I am particularly drawn to the first two.

    1. The illustrations are quite delightful. Movies and theaters are magical. I can't wait to enjoy a show in a theater. The lockdown plus the lack of movies I'd love makes that hard. (I'm not looking for a superhero blockbuster or anything stark and dark now.)

  2. These graphics and photos are fabulous! The cone of light in the first two is mesmerizng -- and I love the contrast between the urban Regal cinema and the W. Virginia country theatre, as well as between the small prompt projector and that huge one in the 1958 photo. There is just something about the moving image that is transporting -- and you have captured that quality in your choice of photos this week. Well done!

    1. I did want to show the contrast between city and country, both of which are special in their own ways. Thank you for visiting.

  4. A terrific selection that each capture some of that wonder of the cinema that was in our theme this weekend. I like how there's an orchestra in Vitascope poster. Most kids today probably would not understand how silent movies actually were not silent and had live music.

The last image reminds me of one of my favorite movies about movies, "The Last Picture Show". With the 21st century enthusiasm for home theaters, steaming movies, etc, the days of sitting in a theatre with hundreds of other people are long gone. The last time my wife and I went to see a movie, pre-covid time, we were the only people in the theater. Sad.
